Dear Sir/ Madam:



I am writing to urge you to speak against the appointment of Daniel Pipes to the Board of the United States Institute for Peace (USIP).



Daniel Pipes is a well-known Islamophobe and polemicist. He is an entirely unsuitable choice to sit on the Board of a federal institution designed to promote the prevention, management, and peaceful resolution of international conflicts.



Pipes lacks the credentials required for service on the institute's board. All board members are required by law to "have appropriate practical or academic experience in peace and conflict resolution.” Pipes has instead dedicated his life to marginalizing American Muslims and denigrating Muslims abroad. He dismisses any but the most extreme interpretations of Islam as unauthentic and has consistently worked to condemn and criticize efforts to provide a more balanced picture of Islam and Muslims. For example, he recently severely criticized the PBS documentary Muhammad, Legacy of a Prophet.



Both the Washington Post and the Dallas Morning News have published editorials critical of the president's decision to nominate Pipes to the USIP board. The Post said Congress "should have the good sense to turn [the nomination] down," and the Dallas Morning News called Pipes a "bad choice." In the Jewish Forward, Judith Kipper, a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said Pipes "has very
extreme views."

The goal of the USIP is conflict management and prevention. A key aspect of conflict management and prevention is a willingness to understand and work with those who hold different opinions. Pipes has consistently attacked and belittled those who do not share his views, as shown by his Orwellian Campus Watch black list of American university scholars. Pipes will not enrich the work of the USIP, he will instead inject into it a highly ideological and polemical perspective that is more likely to engender conflict than it is to prevent it.



Pipes is unsuitable to sit on the Board of the USIP. I urge you to ask the president to reconsider his ill-advised appointment and to withdraw Pipes’ nomination to the Board of this venerable institution.
