Haifa is the main Israeli navy base. Three Dolphin diesel powered German built submarines are based in Haifa Port. The submarines are reportedly capable of firing cruise missiles armed with nuclear warheads. With the addition of these submarines to the fleet, Israel has the ability to launch a nuclear attack from the sea, reducing the hazard that Israel might be rendered defenseless by an attack against nuclear aircraft and land-based missile facilities.
The Israel Navy force has three Gal submarines, built in the 1970s in Britain. The Gal submarines are an important part of the main combat force of the Israel Navy.
Haifa in Hebrew means pretty shore, and is Israel's third largest city and most important seaport. This city is reminiscent of San Francisco because of its hilly terrain and beautiful scenery. Haifa Port served as the gate for hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants who arrived by sea during the period prior to and after the State of Israel came into being. The port is situated in the center of the city of Haifa, which is endowed with a wide range of shipping services, with means of land and air transport to all parts of the country as well as with business and entertainment centers.
The Kishon Port lies on the Kishon River and is not currently physically connected to the main port area. It includes 624m of quay used for handling general cargo, logs, bulk by grabs and ro-ro traffic. "Maspenot Israel" (Israel Docks) Ltd. in the Kishon area is capable of building ships up to 18,000 tons deadweight, including container ships, drydocks and tugs, and of carrying out various repairs, carpentry and electrical systems. The dockyard also deals with design, construction and repairs of military vessels of various types. The dockyard has two floating drydocks with a lifting capacity of 20,000 ton and 1,100 tons. The length of the dockyard and quays is about 900 meters on which stand quay cranes. The dockyard has 30,000 sq.m. of covered construction area.
In a complex logistical operation, the INS Mivtach, the Israel Navy's first missile boat, was brought to the Israel Navy museum in Haifa in early 1999.
The Illegal Immigration and Israel Navy Museum [at 200 Allenby St. located near the entrance to Haifa South] documents the history of the struggle to immigrate to Eretz Israel, 1934-48 and the history of the Israeli Navy since 1948. The ship Af-Al-Pi, which ran the British blockade during the Mandatory period, is on display. The National Maritime Museum [occupying a modern four-story building at 198 Allenby Road] covers nautical history in an audio-video presentation, alternating exhibitions on the subject of the sea and a permanent display on the subject: "5000 Years of Seamanship".
Haifa is a center for the chemical, petrochemical and ****l industries and is a main provider of services for the entire Northern region of Israel. Haifa's port and railway network, modernisation and expansion of Haifa's airport into an international terminal, and the construction of the cross-city tunnel to streamline traffic are some of the improvements underway. A new marina - resort complex and other major tourism projects will attract visitors world wide to Haifa's sea front.
